Rogue River Cleanup

by Dana Hicks, Coordinator

Each year the Lower Rogue Watershed Council holds the Rogue River Cleanup to engage the community, and specifically our youth, in improving the beauty of our river.

During Rogue River Cleanup 2006 we had 9 boats and 53 participants.  We collected over 3 cubic yards of trash including tires, bed springs, pipes and culverts, wire, a car hood, and even half of a kayak!  With your help, we will expand the number of participants, the amount of river and gravel bars covered, and the amount of trash that is removed from our scenic river.

This year the Rogue River Cleanup will be held on Saturday, June 2nd from 9AM-3PM.  We have again partnered with American Rivers and the National River Cleanup Week to raise awareness of the amount of trash entering our nation’s waterways.  Our goal on the local level is to instill a sense of connection to and stewardship of the lower Rogue River.

We specifically target middle school students to get them into boats and out on the river.  Kids cover the lower 27 miles of the Rogue River and 2 miles on the Illinois River.  This year we are adding a “by land” component and asking the community to help clean trash from some of the more popular gravel bars, including Jim Hunt, Huntley, Canfield, Orchard, Lobster and Oak Flat.

Your donation will help immensely in allowing us to have this great event.  Please consider a cash contribution at one of the levels below, or provide one of the services that we need for the event.  People or businesses contributing at the River or Watershed level will be listed in event brochures and media as a partner in the event.  Fill out the information requested in the attached form and return it to the Lower Rogue Watershed Council by April 30th.  Feel free to call with any questions.  Thank you for your support!

New Weed control story posted

The Johnson family has been fighting tansy ragwort for longer than they care to remember.  While fields of two to four foot tall stems with yellow-petalled, daisylike heads sound lovely, they are anything but for ranchers in the Western United States.

Cost Share Dollars Available Now

September 01, 2006

The Curry Weed Advisory Board is pleased to announce the availablility of cost-share dollars for noxious weed control in the Sixes Watershed.  Landowners can complete a short application that describes the problem and proposed solution for a weed management project on their property.  Weeds to be managed must appear on the Curry County Weed List.  The program includes cost share of up to 75% for weed management plans, and up to 50% for on-the-ground weed management projects.  A maximum grant amount of $500 per landowner per year is in place and funding is limited.

"The Sixes River Watershed includes all lands that drain to the Sixes River.  Landowners and land managers have worked together over the last year to form the Sixes Weed Management Area and to write overall management goals.  Targeted weeds are Japanese knotweed, Gorse, and Brooms, all of which are decreasing the productivity of the land and rivers in the basin," says Dana Hicks of the Curry Soil and Water Conservation District.

A cost-share application and the Curry County Weed List can be found at www.currywatersheds.org/agriculture.php Then, click on Cost Share Program on the menu.

Completed applications can be mailed to the Weed Board at PO Box 666, Gold Beach, OR 97444, faxed to 541-247-0408, or e-mailed to dana.hicks@oacd.org.  Funding is provided by the Coos Bureau of Land Management, a partner in the Sixes Weed Management Area.
